Historic NBA-WNBA Alliance: Dallas Mavericks & Dallas Wings Join Forces to Empower Girls

In a groundbreaking move, the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and the WNBA’s Dallas Wings have formed a significant partnership that goes beyond the basketball court. Since co-existing in North Texas since 2015, the two teams have shared mutual admiration, attending each other’s games, and occasionally collaborating on community outreach initiatives.

Now, they are taking their relationship to the next level by forging a business and philanthropic alliance, setting new records in pro basketball history.

The partnership will be officially unveiled during the Dallas Wings’ home game against Chicago, where the team’s jerseys will prominently display a Mavericks-sponsored patch featuring the “Girls Empowered by Mavericks” (GEM) logo across the abdomen. This patch serves as the visible symbol of a much deeper connection, where Wings players and coaches will actively participate in GEM’s year-round programming efforts, empowering approximately 3,000 North Texas girls annually.

Although specific financial details are not disclosed, sources suggest that the Mavericks’ investment in the multi-year deal amounts to seven figures.

Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall expressed excitement about the alliance, describing it as a “match made in heaven.” The collaboration will show the Mavericks’ whole-hearted support for their sister team, and the Wings reciprocating the same level of commitment.

This partnership marks an exceptional milestone as it demonstrates a level of cooperation, breadth, and depth that is uncommon between NBA and WNBA teams without shared ownership.

The centerpiece of the alliance is the “Girls Empowered by Mavericks” (GEM) program, founded in 2021 with the aim of engaging, inspiring, and empowering girls aged 9 to 14 through physical activity. The program has been successful in encouraging stronger mental and emotional health among active girls.

GEM offers various initiatives, including basketball camps, health and wellness clinics, financial empowerment courses, and workshops focusing on leadership skills, inclusion, and academic success through sports.

Over the years, the GEM program has seen tremendous growth, with recent events attracting up to 600 attendees, positively impacting around 5,000 girls in North Texas and beyond.

The Wings’ star guard, Arike Ogunbowale, and her teammates have been actively involved in GEM events in the past. Now, as part of the alliance, the entire Wings organization will be fully integrated into GEM, forming a powerful force with the Mavericks to empower girls throughout the region.

Greg Bibb, president, and CEO of the Wings, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. He believes it presents an opportunity for both teams to achieve much more together than they could individually. The Mavericks’ involvement provides access to the heart of women’s and girls’ basketball in the region, allowing them to extend their positive work in an authentic manner. On the other hand, the Wings’ strong community presence, combined with the Mavericks’ infrastructure, will amplify their impact.

This historic alliance signifies a moment of unity and shared values for both organizations. It will undoubtedly inspire and uplift girls and women in North Texas, contributing to the growth and appreciation of women’s sports. Both teams hope that this collaboration will ignite a spark within young girls, motivating them to explore and embrace various opportunities within the business of basketball or beyond.

As the Wings take to the court for the Inspiring Women’s Weekend game against Chicago, the GEM-sponsored jerseys will symbolize a profound commitment to empowering young girls and women in their community, setting a strong example for other teams and leagues to follow.
